The goal of Mercat is to be a reference point for all artistic disciplines related to movement, principally dance but also visual and gestural theatre, circus, and so on.
The goal of Mercat is to be a reference point for all artistic disciplines related to movement, principally dance but also visual and gestural theatre, circus, and so on.
As well as serving as an important venue for performances by national and international companies, the new trajectory taken by Mercat represents a clear commitment to the encouragement, stimulation, support and promotion of new initiatives, so as to establish the dynamics needed to reaffirm the creativity of our artists and advance their possibilities abroad.
The intention is to offer a plural programme, which reveals different stages of the creative process and also different conceptions of dance. With this in mind, Mercat welcomes fully established international companies and more local productions, as well as programming up-and-coming choreographers who are breaking new ground internationally. Naturally, the centre also has a basic commitment to the programming of national companies. It headed the European Modul-dance project together with eighteen dance houses from the rest of Europe and has become a leading centre for the investigation, production, creation and dissemination of dance and movement arts.
